Training Update

Thought I would blog about my latest training. I have really upped the intensity.

Friday April 3rd-After not riding for a week because of horrible weather I finally got out on Friday after work. Did 20 miles with a friend-it felt good and we could have kept going but it was starting to get dark. That and we kept passing through
the city and smelling good food being cooked and our stomach's were grumbling by then so we packed up our bikes and went over to the engine house bar and grill where we had fantastic cheeseburgers! They were yummy!! I am always so cold after a ride-so a coffee with a splash of bailey's really warmed me up!!lol

Saturday: Woke up and did the annual MS walk that I do every year-Walked 3 miles then me and my riding partner had a good breakfast at Denny's and drove out to check out a new trail I had found. We ended up doing 40 miles!! Our plan was to do 30 but it was so gorgeous out and the trail was so awesome that we did a little extra.......which leads me to a valuable lesson I learned that day! I didn't bring any energy bars or gel or anything with me. I thought breakfast would hold me over (I have no idea what I was thinking) All I had during the ride was a low calorie, electrolite infused gatorade. Couple of lessons I learned:

1- DO NOT do low calorie anything while training!!! lol I am in such a habit of buying low calorie stuff that I didn't even think twice!!

2-BRING energy bars with me!!! I have a ton at home!! They don't do my any good sitting all pretty on my kitchen counter.

3-Hydrate, hydrate hydrate......... MORE!!

I "bonked"-to use cycling terms- out on the last 3-5 miles.

My friend who is an avid cyclist told me it's good that I bonked -for training purposes only though! lol He says now I know what it feels like, and I know when and how I will "bonk". He says the energy bars and gu will SAVE you on the rides.

Those last 3 miles about killed me. I was definitely feeling it!! I was slow, tired, and my muscles hurt. He said if I had gone any more miles I would have started to get dizzy, lightheaded and started seeing spots, etc. Not to mention confused and a bunch of other stuff.

Sunday: Another gorgeous (3 days in a row) day outside. Did a short easy ride with my partner. About 15 miles through the small town of Sumner and along the trail on the river. Easy ride-just what we needed after Saturdays 40 mile ride.

Monday: Did 13 miles with my biking partner, then he had to leave, so I continued along the Foothills path in Orting to make it an even 20 miles. Gorgeous views of Mt Rainier.

Tuesday: Changed it up a bit and went to yoga! It was a good experience. I need to work on my core and strenghthen that for the ride...I figure yoga will help. My back has been bothering me alot on these training rides.

I have also registered for a 60 mile ride on April 19th-it's the annual Daffodil Classic. Should be interesting. Dave Long from MN who is also doing the EMS bike ride will be out in Seattle that weekend so I have talked him into coming out on the ride too. lol

He doesn't know what he is getting himself in for. Julie...shhhh don't tell him.

I have a few other people I have roped into doing this with me-I'm gonna let them lead the way and draft for me!! lol ;)
